Walking talking therapy
Here in the Poole and Bournemouth area we are blessed with beautiful walks, through chine’s and woods, along the beach fronts and through the Bournemouth Gardens. I have walked these walks regularly in my life and over the past two years I have been walking these walks with my clients.
The therapy session remains, the difference is we are walking and talking in fresh air, combining movement with therapy.
This style of therapy works especially well for those suffering from anxiety, as often the thought of sitting opposite a therapist for an hour couldn’t be anymore nerve racking, so walking and talking takes that pressure away and walking in silence is so much more comfortable than sitting in silence ( when in company that is )
Movement therapy has always been an interest to me, how the body stores emotion from the past to the present. What I am offering is a unique style of counselling that’s both beneficial to your health in body and mind, come rain or shine
How will walking and talking therapy help?
It is well documented that exercise releases endorphin’s that make us feel happier, combine that with a counselling session what could be better.
What my clients have found when participating in walking therapy is, they feel more able to move, and because of this they are able to move their emotions; they can stop and start when they feel like. They can sit and ponder whilst looking out to sea or at a flower in bloom. The client controls the walking pace and when to stop and start.
Walking and talking therapy encourages the client to be more physically active and this helps both the mental and physical. It helps clients’ to become unstuck when confronting difficult issues as the movement is already indicating moving forwards, and it spurs creative, deeper ways of thinking helping the client to think more clearly and without restraints.
Clients sometimes become anxious when sitting with a counsellor as they feel under the microscope and the therapist is always looking at them. Walking in parallel takes away that feeling and with the freedom of the fresh air, my clients have found it easier to engage.
